Hey everyone, welcome back to the Bear Chiropractic podcast. I’m Dr. Zimmerman, and today we’re digging into a topic that hits home every Michigan winter: how to avoid common injuries from slips, falls, and yes — snow shoveling.
Let’s start with slips and falls. Icy sidewalks and driveways are a big hazard. A simple slip can lead to wrist sprains, back injuries, or even concussions. One of the best ways to prevent falls is to wear shoes or boots with good traction and walk like a penguin — short, flat-footed steps that keep your center of gravity stable.
But let’s talk snow shoveling — one of the most back-breaking winter chores. First off, warm up before you head outside. A few minutes of gentle stretching can go a long way. Use a lightweight shovel, push snow instead of lifting when you can, and if you do lift, bend at the knees, not your back. Avoid twisting, which is one of the quickest ways to strain your spine.
Now, if you do feel soreness after shoveling or a fall, don’t ignore it. That “just sore” feeling could be your body telling you something’s misaligned. At Bear Chiropractic, we see a lot of winter-related strains and injuries. The good news? Chiropractic care can help realign the spine, reduce inflammation, and support your body’s natural healing process.
